Here are a few helpful pointers from Macy and I on the 5 questions for Exam 2. Remember that you only have to do 3 of them!
Helpful Hints Video Coming
March 30, 2007I just recorded a 5 minute video with some helpful hints for the 5 exam questions below.
I’m editing it now, and it should be up sometime late this evening.
So, check back!
EXAM 2
March 29, 2007Exams are due by Tuesday April 3 at 5pm EST.
Please reply to 3 of the following 5 questions using our class discussions, Tullock and any additional sources that you deem necessary (please cite).
Your responses should be in an essay format (meaning introduction, body paragraphs and a coherent conclusion).
Generally, your responses will be about 1-2 pages for each question.
The aim of your responses should be to show that you’ve been able to synthesize the information from the lectures with the textbook and your own personal experiences. So, please use specific details from your notes as well as general concepts from the story of the OT.
Please use correct grammar and spelling (spell checks). Please cite any sources that you use (footnotes or whatever format you’re accustomed to).
1. Based on our studies of the Deuteronomic History, how do you explain the account of the division of Israel in 1 Kings?
2. Solomon is portrayed as a wise and opulent king in the DH. How does the text account for his mistakes?
3. Compare and contrast the “conquest” of Palestine by the Israelites based in the books of Joshua and Judges.
4. How does Jeroboam seek to firmly establish the Northern Kingdom (Israel) apart from the Southern Kingdom (Judah)? How does the Deuteronomic Historian judge these actions?
5. What events lead up to the creation of the monarchy in Judges and 1 Samuel? Be sure to indicate and include significant figures and events in your response.
We will not have a formal class meeting next Tuesday (or Thursday due to Easter Break), but I will be on campus (in the classroom) if you have questions.
In the meantime, email me or call me if you have any questions!

Extra Credit
March 24, 2007Need some extra credit?
Here’s an easy way to earn a free 100 quiz grade (in case you’ve goofed up on some reading quizzes in the past or missed more than two).
In your own words, write a one page version of the story of Israel from the time of Abraham to David. You can be completely creative (funny is encouraged but not necessary). Of course, you don’t have to hit every event along the way, but include in your version of the story the things you think are most important. You could even give voices to the people mentioned, but not elaborated upon in the text and tell the story from the point of view of the Egyptians or Philistines.
Most importantly, be creative and let me see that you’ve been able to synthesize what we’ve been discussing in class with the larger story of the Old Testament.
Extra Credit is due by 11:59 pm on Monday March 26 (no exceptions).
Don’t ask me for help, either. This is your version of the story!
SBL Student Style Guide
March 21, 2007Here’s a link to the SBL Student Style Guide…
http://www.sbl-site.org/PDF/SBLHS_SS92804_Revised_ed.pdf
You need to follow this style guide for your Analytic Papers due at the end of the semester, so make sure you review it and understand the details.
There’s a very helpful “Samples” part which starts on page 11 which I suggest taking a look at first.
Let me know if you have any questions!
